Park Academy Instructional Approach

Instruction begins with the smallest units of sight, sound, and feel, then builds to the more complex units of language. A highly structured multi-sensory approach integrates the child’s three primary sensory modalities - auditory, sensory, and kinesthetic. When teaching combines all three modalities, a child’s strongest modality reinforces the weaker, while developing integration among the three. This unique delivery allows the student to perceive and process, then store and retrieve language in ways compatible with his/her learning difference, rather than in conflict with it. The principles of this approach are adaptable for all academic subjects at all grade levels, with excellent results.

Park Academy utilizes such tools as the Slingerland Approach, an adaptation of the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory, one-on-one approach to language arts.

A total language approach teaches through (rather than to) the intellect, enabling students to decode and “think through” processes which might be quite automatic for their peers without specific learning differences. Park Academy students find themselves in an atmosphere where their classmates experience similar learning challenges. Classes are limited in size and carefully grouped to maximize individual attention and compatibility. Students benefit from dynamics and interactions tailored to their individual needs. Park Academy strives to keep its students in parity with benchmarks used in public schools. Some students return to their public school systems after sufficient time at the Academy to advance their language skills and learning confidence. It is our hope and our passion to prepare Park Academy students for as high a level of education as their dreams may require.
